Junta destroys over 150 buildings in Arakan over past year: AA

DMG NewsroomJunta destroys over 150 buildings in Arakan over past year: AA - Development Media Group

14 November 2024, Sittwe

The Arakkha Army (AA) has reported that 153 buildings in Arakan State were destroyed over the past year due to airstrikes and artillery shellings by the military junta.

According to an AA statement released on November 13, the one-year anniversary of the resumption of fighting in Arakan State, the destroyed or damaged buildings included universities, hospitals, clinics, schools and religious buildings.

Among the buildings destroyed were 12 hospitals, 30 schools, 70 Buddhist monasteries, one Christian church, two mosques, 21 markets, and 17 government offices.

An Arakanese youth from Kyauktaw Township said: "It is shameful that the regime has destroyed public infrastructure and religious buildings. Such acts strip the junta of any remaining honour or dignity in the eyes of the world."

Civilians displaced by the fighting have taken shelter at religious buildings that were subsequently targeted by the regime in some cases. Junta air raids have inflicted numerous civilian casualties.

On November 10, the junta launched airstrikes on the Myaseinyaung Pagoda and the Lanma Buddhist Monastery in Buthidaung Township, wounding five civilians including one monk.

On November 2, four internally displaced people (IDPs) were killed and two others including the abbot injured in a junta air attack on a monastery in Pyar Thar Village, Maungdaw Township.

One woman from Ramree Town said: "The regime often targets religious buildings and schools, killing or wounding many civilians taking shelter in those buildings. The regime is violating international law without any regard for the Geneva Conventions. It only targets public infrastructure and civilians, not military positions."

As the regime continues to struggle on the battlefield in Arakan State, it has ramped up its aerial bombardment campaign, intensifying attacks on civilian populations.
